Artisan Enhancements FAQs

CLEAR FINISH

Clear Finish is a water-based, No VOC, all natural, non-yellowing acrylic varnish. It is formulated for ultimate clarity with a satin to glossy finish. It is water resistant and protects painted finishes. Clear Finish works well with “whites” as it will keep them bright and will not lift color or stain from beneath. Great on cabinets and over foil, leaf or high sheen finishes like Pearl Plaster. Do NOT use over wax as you can with Clear Topcoat sealer. Shake or stir before application.

How To Apply:

Apply a thin coat using a flat edged brush (like the AE Topcoat brush because it is a combination of natural and synthetic hair) or a short nap roller. Allow to dry before adding another coat. It should be dry to the touch in about 30 minutes. Recoat in 2 to 3 hours.

NOTE: This product has a satin to gloss finish and it is more sensitive to showing brush strokes. It is recommended to work the product into the surface. It will appear more matte if used over Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.

STORAGE: Seal the container tightly and do not let freeze. Store a room temperature. Keep away from extreme heat.

CLEAR TOPCOAT SEALER

This is an exterior grade, soya-based, no VOC, non-yellowing alkyd penetrating sealer that is formulated for clarity with a matte sheen. Clear Topcoat is water resistant (once cured). It dries to a clear finish that helps protect painted, plastered and stained surfaces. It is a versatile product that works well over or under most paints.

RECOMMENDED USE: Use on surfaces that need a protective coating or seal. For use on wood, plaster and concrete surfaces. Because it is an oil-based and all natural penetrating sealer it is not recommended for use over chemical based cleaners and mineral spirits unless they have been completely wiped back and allowed to “off gas” which normally takes 24 hours. Oil-based penetrating sealers re-wet whatever is underneath your paint so work on a clean an completely dry surface before beginning. If you are concerned, try a test spot first.

APPLICATION: Stir or shake completely before use. Wipe the surface with with soap and water to remove residue or chemical. Apply Two very thin coats using a brush, roller or sprayer and allow to dry before reapplication. Make sure the first coat is cry before applying the second.) Topcoat dries to the touch very quickly in about 45 minutes. For optimal results let each layer dry for 24 hours before the next coat. If the surface does not dry quickly too much products has been applied or a chemical is interfering. A chemical interference could be a cleaning product or heavy varnish.

TIP: When painting over old furniture, raw wood or concrete, use Clear Topcoat Sealer before painting. Use two coats to seal the surface and eliminate bleed –through. This product CAN be used over or under waxed surfaces. When using over wax, wipe the wax back and only use a thin coat of Clear Topcoat Sealer.

CAUTION: Do not use Clear Topcoat Sealer over white paint. When whites are coated with oil-based products the surface can take on a yellow or brown hue and be prone to bleed-through. Try a test spot before using.

PRODUCT STORAGE: Do not let freeze. Do not expose to direct sun or extreme heat. Do not apply when air and surface temperatures are below 50 degrees F.

CRACKLE TEX

Crackle Tex reproduces the sophisticated, aged, antiques look of weathered paint and/or plaster. It is a clear medium that allows water-based paint or plaster to chip or crackle. It is not intended to crack latex paint but it does work well with water-based flat paints such as chalky or clay paint. It cracks beautifully with Fine Stone and VP Antico. A unique feature is that it can be used as a “pull off” or “chipped” techniques for added texture. Crackle Tex has no VOCs. Clean up is easy with soap and water.

RECOMMENDED USE: Crackle Tex is formulated for application on cabinets, furniture, walls and previously painted or basecoated surfaces.

APPLICATION: Add a base coat (if necessary) and let dry. Brush or roll on a liberal coat of Crackle Tex and allow to dry completely. Then apply a liberal coat of paint and do not overwork this application. Watch as Crackle Tex does all of the work. Cracks appear as soon as the paint starts to dry. Use light pressure when brushing or rolling. The base coat is the coating that shows through the cracks. For larger cracks apply more product and paint. To get a natural irregular crackle finish, use a stipple effect by blotting product on lightly. For linear cracks apply paint and Crackle Tex with linear strokes.

NOTE: If cracks do not appear use more paint and/or Crackle Tex. Do not over-work the application. Try using two coats of Crackle Tex. Be sure to work on a sealed surface or seal it first with Clear Topcoat Sealer or use two heavy coats of product.

STORAGE: Seal container tightly and do not let freeze. Do not expose to direct sunlight or extreme heat. Do not apply when air or surface temperature is below 50 degrees F.

EASY CRACKLE

Easy Crackle reproduces the sophisticated, aged, antiqued look of weathered paint and/or plaster. Easy Crackle is a clear medium that will allow paint or plaster to create a chipped/crackled effect for a subtle classic appearance. It is not intended to crack latex paint, but water based flat paint, such as a chalky or clay paint. It cracks beautifully with Artisan Enhancement’s Fine Stone and VP Antico. It can be applied with brush or roller. Easy Crackle has no VOC. It cleans up easy with soap and water.

RECOMMENDED USE: Easy Crackle is formulated for application on cabinets, furniture, walls and previously painted or base coated surfaces.

APPLICATION: Simply apply a base coat (if necessary) and let dry. Brush or roll on a liberal coat of Easy Crackle and allow to thoroughly dry. Once dry, apply a liberal coat of paint and watch as Easy Crackledoes all the work! Cracks will appear as soon as the paint starts drying (do not over work your paint). Use a light pressure when brushing or rolling. The base coat is the coating that you will see through the cracks. To achieve a natural irregular crackle finish, apply Easy Crackle and coat of paint with a stipple effect (blot product on). To create a linear cracked look, brush Easy Crackle and paint on with linear strokes. To create heavier cracking apply more product and paint (or use Crackle Tex). Allow to dry and use Artisan Enhancements Clear Topcoat to seal.

**If cracks do not appear, not enough Easy Crackle or paint was applied or the product was overworked and therefore wiped back. Reapply product but with a heavier hand (2 coats of Easy Crackle). Make sure you are working on a surface that has been previously sealed, if not seal your surface first with Clear Topcoat Sealer or apply 2 reasonably heavy coats of product.

STORAGE: Seal container tightly and do not let freeze or expose to direct sunlight or extreme heat. Do not apply product when air and surface temperatures are below 50°F.

PEARL PLASTER

Pearl Plaster creates an opulent and luxurious pearly finish. Once applied, the finish will resemble velvet with a shimmering pearlescent vibrancy. Pearl Plaster is a no VOC coating that will adhere to any properly base coated and prepared surface. It cleans up easy with soap and water.

RECOMMENDED USE: Pearl Plaster is formulated for use on base coated walls and furniture.

APPLICATION: Mix product thoroughly before use. Pearl Plaster can be painted, trowelled or rolled on for different results. It can be dry brushed, mixed with paint to be tinted (although it will still be opaque) or pushed through a stencil using a Color Shaper. You can wax over Pearl Plaster or finish off using Clear Finish. Pear Plaster can also be thinned. If mixing with paint spritz your surface with water as you brush or roll and it will give you a smoother effect. You can use a dark wax over Pearl Plaster to create a golden finish or glaze with Scumble and a variety of paint colors for multiple effects (we love it with Coco or Graphite). If not waxing, seal surface with Clear Finish to keep the sheen level high.

**To achieve a metallic look over darker/deeper colors use Scumble to glaze with Pearl Plaster. If applying on a wall…. apply a skim coat with trowel or brush directly on surface. If using a trowel, place material on edge of at a 45°angle and cover entire area. Work material from wet to dry area. Once first coat has properly dried, repeat the process. As material starts to setup, smooth down with trowel to obtain a velvet effect.

STORAGE: Seal container tightly and do not let freeze or expose to direct sunlight or extreme heat. Do not apply product when air and surface temperatures are below 50°F (10°C).

LEAF & FOIL SIZE

Leaf & Foil Size by Artisan Enhancements® is a clear no VOC water based medium with a long open time (almost indefinitely) to be used for all foil and leafing projects. Once applied it provides a flawless tacky surface for the application of metallic leafing and foils. Leaf & Foil Size only needs one pass and has an easy release. It will not discolor your treated surface and has been formulated for a smooth and easy application. Size can be rolled or brushed on, it will usually tack up within 45 - 60 minutes (it will take longer on a wall) and will remain tacky until a sealer or finish is applied.

RECOMMENDED USE: Leaf & Foil Size can be used over latex, oil and water based paints. Can be used on furniture, wood, walls, and previously painted nonporous surfaces. Apply using a brush or roller. If working with Chalk Paint® spritz your surface lightly with water for easier application. Brush or roll product on lightly. You only need a light layer of product. Wait 45-60 minutes for product to tack up, and then apply foil (shiny surface up) or leafing. Surface tack test can be achieved with your finger (when you remove your finger you will hear a snapping sound). Allow to dry (24 hours + is optimal). Apply a thin coat Clear Topcoat Sealer (if wanting a more matte finish) or a coat of Clear Finish (if wanting to keep the sheen level high). If you do not seal your surface it will remain tacky indefinitely. You can wax your surface after sealer has been applied. You can use hand sanitizer to get “tackiness” off your hands and sizing can be cleaned up with rubbing alcohol to help clean up brush or rollers. Tip: Best to be working with a darker base paint for foils to be more vibrant.

STORAGE: Seal container tightly and do not let freeze or expose to direct sunlight or extreme heat. Do not apply product when air and surface temperatures are below (50°F) 10°C. When resealing product use alcohol around rim before resealing or apply foil under rim so it won’t stick.

TRANSFER GEL

Transfer Gel is a transparent fibrous gel medium that transfers a design/image printed from a laser jet or professional printed material onto a surface. It can also be used to decoupage or use over leaf and foil projects.

RECOMMENDED USE: Transfer Gel can be used over paint on furniture, wood, walls, and any previously painted surface.

APPLICATION: Stir product thoroughly. Brush Transfer Gel on image covering the paper that will be applied to surface. Apply paper with print face down (make sure print is mirror imaged). Use a smoothing tool to adhere paper evenly to surface. Allow paper to dry to assure the image has transferred. Best to let image transfer completely overnight but drying time can be sped up with use of a hairdryer. Spritz paper with water, then use your hand or sponge to roll away top layer of image first. Removal of excess paper can be done by hand or with a sponge. A two sided kitchen sponge works great as you can use rough side to remove excess paper around image. Your image actually sits on the Transfer Gel so do not remove the gel as you will remove the image.

Do not over work the removal of your image. Test small spot to assure drying is complete. Keep in mind Transfer Gel is not intended to give you a perfect “copied” look, so if you accidentally remove some of the image go with it and distress the sides a little.

TIP: To get less of a “halo” once paper is removed cover entire surface with paper so no edges are evident (although edges create an aged look once dark waxed or color washed over). If you want to remove “halo”, lightly sand the edges with a fine grit paper (halo tends to appear less on lighter paint). Apply Artisan Enhancements® Clear Topcoat Sealer or Clear Finish.

STORAGE: Seal container tightly and do not let freeze or expose to direct sunlight or extreme heat. Do not apply product when air and surface temperatures are below (50°F) 10°C.

FINE STONE

Fine Stone by Artisan Enhancements® is a low VOC tintable plaster that has a “beach sand” aggregate texture. Fine Stone helps you create stone finishes on furniture, walls, etc. It can be brushed, toweled, rolled on or pushed through stencils. It has been developed for both indoor and outdoor use. Fine Stone is one of Artisan Enhancements most versatile products that will work well with the entire Artisan Enhancements® line.

RECOMMENDED USE: Fine Stone is formulated for application both indoor and outdoor. Can be used on cabinets, furniture, walls, concrete, metal, plastic and clay.

APPLICATION: Stir product thoroughly before use. Simply use “as is” or mix Fine Stone with your choice of paint color (1 to 5 ratio of paint to Fine Stone tends to work best). Brush, roll or trowel on a coat of Fine Stone and allow to thoroughly dry. It can be pushed through a stencil with a stencil brush or use a Color Shaper (our preferred method). Don’t apply too thickly or it can crack (although that is a look worth achieving for an aged effect). Sand down to knock off edges or to achieve a finer look once dried. Use Artisan Enhancements Clear Topcoat Sealer to seal.

**Fine Stone and Pearl Plaster blend well together and create an interesting pearly/sand effect that can be used outside as well as inside. It bonds well to clay pots and metal. It also cracks beautifully with Crackle Tex or Easy Crackle.

STORAGE: Seal container tightly and do not let freeze or expose to direct sunlight or extreme heat. Do not apply product when air and surface temperatures are below 50°F.

VP ANTICO

VP Antico is a synthetic polishing plaster used to create Venetian plaster finishes. Once applied, it will resemble a smooth honed finish. VP Antico has a neutral base which allows it to be easily tinted from light to dark colors (it can be tinted with Chalk Paint®, Mixols or taken to your local paint store for tinting). It can be used to create texture and also relief stencil designs. It mixes well with paint to make you paint thicker. Try using it with Crackle Tex to create an “aged” crackle look.

Recommended Use: VP Antico is formulated for use on base coated walls and furniture. VP Stir thoroughly before and during use. VP Antico can be used with a trowel “as is” or mixed with paint and rolled on for different results. It can be pushed through a stencil with a Color Shaper on furniture pieces as well as walls.

Stir thoroughly before and during use. Let product air out if you want a thicker medium. Apply two thin coats using a trowel or spatula. If using a trowel, place material on edge at a 45°angle and cover entire area. If using a roller a 3/8” nap works best.

STORAGE: Seal container tightly and do not let freeze or expose to direct sunlight or extreme heat. Do not apply product when air and surface temperatures are below 50°F.

SCUMBLE

Scumble is a transparent, tintable “glaze like” medium with a long open time. Scumble can be used like traditional glaze but is formulated to be mixed with Chalk Paint® or tints. It has a neutral base which allows it to be easily tinted from light to dark colors. You can even take it to your local paint store for tinting. Scumble has an extended “open time” of approximately 15 - 20 minutes. “Open time” means you have the flexibility to wipe the product off while you are working. If tinting the product with Chalk Paint® start with a 1 to 3 ratio of Chalk Paint® to Scumble. The mixture will thicken as the product sits. This will not affect your finish, but if you like it thinner just add more Scumble to your mix. Play with the ratios of paint to Scumble until you get your desired color.

RECOMMENDED USE: Scumble is formulated for use on base coated furniture, cabinets and doors. Brush or roll on a thin layer of untinted Scumble on your painted surface as a “slip coat” (this gives you a good workable surface). Quickly add your next layer of tinted Scumble and wipe back after a few minutes. (You do not want your “slip coat” to dry as it could crack before you add your next layer). Timing on wiping your tinted layer back depends on depth of color you would like. The longer you leave it on the more tint stays on your surface. Try a test spot to achieve your desired result. Once completely dried add Clear Topcoat Sealer or Clear Finish.

STORAGE: Seal container tightly and do not let freeze or expose to direct sunlight or extreme heat. Do not apply product when air and surface temperatures are below 50°F.
