All Fall Home Décor 25% Off + Tips On Wax Finishes for Painted Cabinets

ARE YOU PLANNING TO PAINT YOUR KITCHEN CABINETS?
HERE IS ADVICE ON USING ANNIE SLOAN'S SOFT WAX AND HOW TO PREP THE SURFACE.

QUESTION:
HOW DO I PREPARE THE SURFACE OF MY CABINETS? DO I NEED TO SAND?

Chalk Paint® decorative paint adheres to almost any surface, indoors and outside, and there’s rarely a need to sand or prime before painting. Most times cleaning and
dusting off the surface will do. There may be times, however, when you’ll need to sand to remove loose paint, rust, and other surface debris, or when the surface is very glossy (this includes melamine and laminates). Remember to change out your piece of sandpaper when it becomes clogged with old paint, etc. A fresh sheet makes the task at hand easier to accomplish.

QUESTION:
HOW DURABLE IS A WAX FINISH?

When wax is first "harvested" it is in a hard form ... so hard that it can rarely be used that way. So it is softened with a solvent (ours is white spirits) that allows the wax to be easily applied. Once the wax has dried and cured (meaning the solvents have evaporated), the wax is hard again. Is it durable? Yes, under normal wear and tear. Can it be scratched? Yes, just like any other durable clear finish (think of your car). Can it be repaired? Yes, and much more easily than a varnish finish.

QUESTION:
SHOULD I USE DARK WAX? I HEAR THAT IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO USE.

Dark Wax can lend a gorgeous, aged patina to your finish. But for many new to using wax, it can take practice before attempting a large project with lots of big, flat areas to cover. At Bella B Décor, we suggest using Dark Wax just in the creases of the panels. It's easy to do with a small brush, and very attractive.

Burgundy is a rich deep warm red the color of dark cherries. It is now one of the classic colors used in particular for neo-classical painted furniture.

Annie Sloan's Craqueleur Adds An Old World Flair To Furniture Finishes

HOW DOES CRAQUELURE WORK?

Annie's Craquelure product does not crackle the paint, it is painted in two steps on top of your finish to create the look of cracked varnish on an old master oil painting. The size of the cracks can be varied according to how fine a layer of the Step 2 is applied in particular. The thinner it is, the smaller the cracks.

FAQs FROM OUR WEBSITE:

Q. Can I use it in a bathroom or kitchen where there is a lot of moisture?

A. It is not advisable. Excessive moisture can cause the cracks to reactivate and the paintwork to become milky in appearance.

Q. My Step 2 has become thick and is difficult to use. Is the product okay?

A. The product is fine. Place the container in a bowl of very hot water where the warmth will thin it our. You can also dip the tip of your brush into very hot water, wiping it off so that the tip is moist (but not wet) to make it easier to paint.

Q. What size cracks can I expect?

A. That's hard to say because the cracks can vary widely depending on the thickness of application. It is always wise to do a test piece first. Thinner applications will give you smaller cracks whereas thicker applications produce larger cracks, but don't apply these materials too thick. If you apply two coats of Step 1 you will get a larger crack, but if you feather or overwork Step 2 the crack is likely to be smaller.
